Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15th to October 15th each year, was officially established in the United States in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. Its purpose is to recognize the enduring influence and accomplishments of Hispanic Americans in various fields, including art, music, literature, science, politics, and business. Hispanic Heritage Month has its origins in the commemoration of independence for several Latin American countries. September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16th, followed by Chile on September 18th. The month-long celebration provides an opportunity not only to honor these historical events but also to celebrate the ongoing contributions of Hispanic-owned businesses to the nation’s economy.
The Hispanic community in the USA has grown significantly over the years and has become a vital part of the nation's fabric. One of the most remarkable aspects of this growth is the proliferation of Hispanic-owned businesses. These businesses are making substantial contributions to the U.S. economy, job creation, and communities.
Economic Impact: Hispanic-owned businesses have a substantial economic impact. According to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, there are over 4.7 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States, generating approximately $800 billion in annual revenue. This demonstrates the economic power of the Hispanic business community.
Job Creation: Hispanic entrepreneurs are playing a pivotal role in job creation. These businesses employ millions of people across various industries, contributing to lower unemployment rates in Hispanic communities and fostering economic development in both urban and rural areas.
Community Engagement: Many Hispanic-owned businesses are deeply rooted in their communities. They often participate in community events, sponsor local initiatives, and give back through philanthropic efforts. This level of community engagement helps build stronger, more connected neighborhoods and fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents.
Entrepreneurial Inspiration: Hispanic-owned businesses serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs within the Hispanic community and beyond. By showcasing the success stories of Hispanic business owners, these businesses encourage others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, fostering a spirit of ambition and self-reliance.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, B:Side is proud to have sponsored Mi Casa’s Las Jefas and Jefes in the Making event last week. It was truly an inspiring night from a resource center that has been operating in Denver for nearly 50 years! We are also proud to have sponsored and participating in several panels this month for Spanish-speaking business owners at Denver Startup Week, SOCO Startup Week, West Slope Startup Week, and Boulder SBDC’s Contract Opportunities Conference.
Let’s continue to join in the celebration and support Hispanic-owned businesses, and honor the significant contributions they have made. Don’t forget we offer small business resources in Spanish! Check out our resources here.
